The last meeting of the calendar year is always a well attended affair, and a full field of 30 IPAGs assembled at Royal Wimbledon to contest the Mitchell Autumn Trophy (best Stableford score) and D’Arcy Trophy (best gross score).
Faced with mild temperatures and barely a breath of wind, the course seemed there for the taking. But the subtle contours of Royal Wimbledon’s excellent greens made scoring a challenge, with only three golfers achieving a score of 36 points or better.
Jimmy Butchart continued a fine run of form to take third place with a level twos score of 36, tinged with disappointment as he blobbed the last hole.
But two titans of the IPAGs locked horns in a battle for the top spot, with President (and former Royal Wimbledon captain) Andy Byrd triumphing with 40 points, leaving perennial contender John Farrell having to settle for second on 37.
Byrd also took home the F John Roe Silver Salver (best score aged 50+) and Golden Oldies (60+), while Farrell had his revenge in the gross competition, his 78 pipping arch-rival Byrd by a single stroke.
After a well lubricated carvery lunch, the IPAGs took on the second edition of the Post Prandial Putter - a scratch foursomes competition contested by randomly drawn pairs. Some 15 pairs took part in an 18-hole qualifying round, with the top eight moving on to the knock out stage.
Messrs Byrd and Farrell went at it again in an epic quarter final that went to the seventh extra hole, but eventually Jon Davie and Rupert Garrett emerged victorious.
