IPAGS vs SW1GS
Our 2027 match against the SW1Gs will take place at West Hill on 25 May.
2026 Match Report
The third annual match between IPAGS and SW1GS saw the series finely balanced at 1-1 and so much effort was expended to ensure that IPAGS fielded a strong team in the blazing sunshine.
Ed Glover and Tim Stevens got IPAGS off to a flying start with a 5&4 victory, but it proved harder work for the pairs after them and the morning proved finely balanced: the teams enjoyed an excellent West Hill lunch with the score at 3-3 and all to play for.
Buoyed by a fine lunch, by wine expertly chosen by Tim Stevens and by a less-than rousing team talk from the Captain, the team managed to get their noses in front early in the afternoon Greensomes.
At this point, the Captain’s inspired leadership finally came in to play: Having paired himself with Matt Wright, last year’s all conquering victor, he finally found a set of shoulders wide enough to carry him and the middle game moved gently in IPAGS’ favour.
The other middle games continued to be finely balanced, but when Kerin and Butchart made their way back to the club house with a good point from the sixteenth hole, IPAGS were left only needing a half from the final game to ensure a narrow victory.
Both sides were gathered in the sunshine on the terrace to watch this final game in. Another of last year’s heroes, Steve Henderson, partnered by Paul Smith, held his nerve against the SW1GS captain, Jamie Lindsay and his partner, to complete a two-up win and to win the match 7-5.
A thoroughly good match and a good day was had by all. It was agreed by both sides that the match should become fixture, and SW1GS Captain undertook to procure a trophy for next year.

2025 Match Report
Our inaugural match against the SW1GS last year saw the IPAGs come up agonisingly short, with three of the afternoon greensomes matches being concluded on the final hole and the match decided in SW1Gs’ favour by a single point.
So revenge was in the air at West Hill as a strong IPAGS team assembled on the first tee, with captain Niel Bornman and partner Dan Smith leading the charge. But it was clear that the SW1Gs wouldn’t give up without a fight, and the first point went to the holders as the IPAGs pair went down to a 3/2 defeat.
The next four morning better ball matches saw four wins for IPAGs, with a nerveless up-and-down from a greenside bunker by Steve Henderson in front of the crowded terrace being the highlight. The SW1Gs took the final match leaving the lunchtime score 4-2 in our favour.
Buoyed by a fine lunch and a rousing team talk, the IPAGs took the morning momentum and stormed to a series of handsome wins in the afternoon greensomes. Captain Bornman chalked up a point with an impressive 6/5 drubbing alongside the ever-reliable Henderson, while debutant Matt Wright got his IPAGs career off to a winning start, adding to his morning success with another point alongside last year’s captain Jon Davie.
SW1Gs managed to notch up a solitary win in the fifth match, by which time the result was long since secured - a 9-3 victory for IPAGs, and last year’s defeat comprehensively avenged.

2024 report
A new addition to our fixture list for 2024 saw a dozen IPAGs assemble at West Hill to do battle with a hand-picked team from the SW1Gs, a society representing professionals from the media industry.
The morning fourballs were tightly contested, with three of the six matches going to the last hole. Crack IPAGs pair Matt Reynolds and Steve Henderson cruised to an 8/7 victory, but skipper Jon Davie and last minute sub Mark Tiffany were the only other team to get on the scoreboard, emerging from a tense battle with half a point.
With the score at lunch 4.5 to 1.5 in favour of the SW1Gs, the IPAGs team had it all to do in the afternoon greensomes. But fortified by a typically-excellent West Hill lunch, the team raced out of the traps, emerging victorious in the first three matches. Henderson and Emma Robbins held a one up lead playing the last hole in match four, but were denied a full point by SW1Gs captain James Walden.
That left the scores tied with just two games left on the course, and while Henry Moore and Ed Glover brought home a brave half in the last match, the IPAGs fell one point short of a comeback to match the Miracle at Medinah.
All the matches were played in terrific spirit, and as the teams mingled on the terrace after play, it was agreed by all parties that we the fixture should become an annual event.
Congratulations to the SW1Gs - here’s to a re-match in 2025!
